Where's the NASCAR love?!

Post by frfksakes on Wed Aug 27, 2008 2:09 pm

Last Nascar post was almost a month ago!?.. have they put you all to sleep, lol?

Just curious about everyone's thoughts about the Kyle and Carl show?

I’m loving it, personally,, lol,.. kind of a shot in the arm.. the racing is getting a little better each week, too.

(& what does everyone think about Carl? Lol
Has he just been racing hard the last few months against Kyle and Clint, etc? Or is he racing dirty?)

Who’s everyone’s first and second choice for the chase cup?

And how about Keselowski?! I hope he wins the Nationwide series.

Still think all races should be on the short tracks and road courses, lol - they are by far the most exciting.

I'm getting stoked for the weekend! I know it's only California, but I'll be there so I'm pumped!
Went to the Jimmie Johnson Foundation dinner and auction Tuesday night. ($480 ticket, compliments of the Ford dealer I work for!) Jimmie, Casey Mears, Brian Vickers, Tommy Kendall, Rick Hendrick. Talked to them during cocktail hour, then dinner and the auction. The place just OOZED money! $9,000 for a Tony Stewart driver's suit. $18,000 for the helmet Jimmie wore when he won the CA race last year! $30,000 for a fishing trip on Hendrick's 80 ft. yacht! Eli and Peyton autographed jerseys, lots more. My boss played in the golf tournament today. ($4800 for a foursome!) Jimmie pulled in almost a half mil last year, and they're hoping to top that this year. He's from the area, so he's building four houses here for Habitat for Humanity.
It was quite an experience!

WOW!!! Sounds like a pretty awesome night!

I'm surprised you didn't see Dean!! Lol

California is probably my least favorite track, yet I’m actually looking forward to the race myself! (Though I think you’ll have better seats Wink )

I hate to admit it, but the new car and new-ish format (The Chase) really seem to be working right now to make things more exciting,,,

Have fun!!!
(& keep sharing! I'm totally jealous, but it's fun to read how much fun you're having, lol)

Hey, I don't come snoring in your football threads,,,,

(and GOLF???? Rolling Eyes Since Tiger changed his swing and is now a machine, even he's not all that fun to watch anymore..
unless he's injured, there's just no suspense - it's not if he's going to win, but by how much..... Ochoa was interesting for a bit, but she's just not the same lately...)

(ps I was glued to NCAA hoops, this past season - and love Tennis at the Venus/Nadal/Federer level...)

I still watch the Chargers religiously, but if they're on at the same time the race is, the football gets DVR'd. I've got to hear Matt's radio live!
For those of you that think racing is boring, I know what you mean. I was in Hooters trying to watch the Indy 500 this past Memorial weekend. With no sound and no knowledge of what's going on, it is!
I've been blasted before for saying this, but it's like baseball. It looks boring as hell, until you know all the little things going on while they're running around in circles. Then you find out the driving around the track is almost incidental!

Which is exactly the same in NASCAR. Some races are more exciting than others,,, some points in the season are more exciting than others, and it's all more exciting the more you're invested in it,,, and even more so when you have a favorite driver,,, and even more so if that driver is having a great season, or even just a great race....

And, of course, sometimes even the best race can have the excitement sucked right out of it by lousy camerawork/ broadcasting of the race…. And then I totally understand why people don’t get NASCAR, lol…

But, again, it’s exactly like you’re saying for golf or baseball…
- which 90% of the time, for me, are both the very definition of “watching paint dry” or ”corn/grass grow” lol - and where my enjoyment depends on the level of talent I’m watching, and how invested I am in the sport – (to understanding what's going on, and to getting to know the cast of characters),,,

And then it’s just pure preference.

Personally, I find that they can all be a little boring at times, are all a lot of fun at their best - but on any given day, I'd much rather watch bumping and driving door-to-door at nearly 200 miles an hour than putting, or no score for 8 or 9 innings, lol...

The absolute BEST way to watch Nascar is at the track with a good scanner.
Even if your favorite driver gets wrecked and spends two laps on pit road making repairs, you can watch him the whole time if you want. You can watch anything, and anyone you want.
You can listen to your team all day if you want. You can switch over and listen to Nascar if you want. (Then you would know they're WAY too busy to worry about their so-called favorites or deciding the outcome.) You can dial-up the guy that just got wrecked and find out what he REALLY thinks about the guy that just hit him! lol.
ALL things you can't do in front of your TV.
And all things I'm going to do (along with pit road, the garage, hospitality tent, and more) THIS SUNDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
California a.k.a. Auto Club Speedway may suck, but I STILL cannot wait to get there!
A bad day at the track, is better than a good day at work!

What a snoozefest!

NASCAR is shooting itself in the foot with tracks like California.

It is the living example of why people hate NASCAR, imo

and yet we have multiple races at this tracks and tracks just like it, instead of tracks like Bristol.... go figure.

(do hope you had fun, though, Gary, lol
I'm sure it made a BIG dfference being there in person,,, oh, and that 17 did good! Wink )

Actually, the racing at California is getting better. Knowing ESPN, I'm sure you had no idea though. Did you see a lot of #48 driving around by himself? Believe it or not, there was a LOT of three and sometimes even four-wide racing going on back in the pack. Oh, and some guy came from 37th starting spot to finish FIFTH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very Happy

Haha!!! yeah, that was pretty cool... the best part for me, actually, because I could just "see" you hoopin' and hollaring... Laughing

SDGary wrote: Did you see a lot of #48 driving around by himself?

pretty much. Rolling Eyes

they'd show glimpses of 4-wide driving, only to go back to watching Jimmie go round and round, because, oooo, Biffle had cut the lead to only 2 secs, lol...

Again, I'm sure it was great live, but I've yet to see an exciting race at Cal.

Anything fun to share about your weekend?

Had a great time. Went up with a friend who has a Corvette Z06, so I got to ride in that. NICE car! We were in the DuPont hospitality AIR-CONDITIONED tent, so that was nice. Was meeting some other Kenseth fans while Jeff Gordon was there to talk, so I missed him, but, oh, well. One of the people I met was a woman from Australia. Big fan of Marcos Ambrose, but also a fan of Matt's. Eight of them flew over for the race! 13-hour flight!
Nothing really special happened, but I realized how much I missed being at the track. This was only my fourth race this year. The first since Phoenix in April. And only Phoenix in November left. I usually do a lot more. Eight last year, and 11 the year before. Of course, I'm still paying for those, so that's why it's only five this year! lol.
I bad-mouth California a lot, and they deserve it, but I still had a great time. I KNOW it looks bad on TV, but honestly, the racing is getting better than it used to be. But mostly, I just love being at a racetrack!
(I'm going to be in Detroit this weekend to see my girlfriend, but we'll both be bummed, because we've been in Richmond the last three years for the fall race, and we'll have to watch this one on TV. Crying or Very sad )

Yes, I have! lol. I almost went to work for a scanner company a few years back. I still don't know if I regret that or not! lol.

I hope they get Richmond in Saturday night. I get into Detroit around 4:00 Saturday afternoon, so I'll be able to watch it, but they're worried about the weather. They may have to run it Sunday. That happened in the spring last year. We were there, but we had to catch our planes up in D.C. so we never got to see the race!
